City invites feedback on external service provider option for water reuse

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate is calling on the public to comment on the feasibility of using an external service delivery mechanism to implement and operate the Faure New Water Scheme. The comment period starts today, Monday, 17 March 2025 until Thursday, 17 April 2025.
The City is encouraging public comment on the option of using a suitable external service delivery mechanism to implement and operate the proposed Faure New Water Scheme, which will be situated at the existing Faure Water Treatment Plant.
‘It’s crucial that Cape Town becomes less dependent on unpredictable rain-fed dams. For this reason, water reuse is part of Cape Town’s multi-pronged action plan, to help build Cape Town’s water resilience against climate shocks as well as to supply the demand for a growing population.
‘The City is the designated water services provider, responsible for the production of Cape Town’s drinking water supply and maintenance of the system.
‘Due to the advanced process system of the Faure New Water Scheme, it may be more suitable to contract an external company to provide services for this project.
‘We’d like to give the public a fair chance to assess the information available and provide valuable input on these matters.
‘Residents and stakeholders can submit their comments up until 17 April 2025. All feedback will be considered and incorporated in the feasibility study report, which will also be made available for public comment before it is submitted to Council for approval,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.
The call for public participation on the latest developments on water reuse, opens at a significant milestone. Cape Town is currently the co-host of the 14th International Water Association (IWA) Conference on Water Reclamation and Reuse, taking place from 16 - 20 March 2025 at the CTICC.
This prestigious global event brings together water experts, policymakers, academics and industry leaders, to discuss cutting-edge advancements in water reuse practices and sustainable water management.
The City’s efforts to explore alternative water supply solutions align closely with the themes of the conference, reinforcing Cape Town’s international position in water innovation and resilience.

Information sessions
Residents and interested parties are invited to attend information sessions. These sessions will provide insight into why the City is considering using external service provider/s for the Faure New Water Scheme:

About water reuse:
Water reuse involves using advanced technology to convert treated wastewater into drinking water, which meets local and international quality standards.
The advanced technology includes a multi-barrier advanced water purification process.
This water will be used to augment the municipal bulk water supply.
This water scheme forms part of the City’s various water augmentation projects in the City's New Water Programme (NWP) and Water Strategy, which aims to diversify drinking water supply resources and build a resilient future supply.
The Faure New Water Scheme is expected to produce 70 million litres of water per day. Overall, the Water Strategy aims to increase the city’s water supply by an additional 300 million litres from diversified sources.
